This indicator is for measuring the Bugs found In-House as a % of the total bugs found per software program released. In order to obtain an accurate figure, this KPI should be measured at least monthly and quarterly after the product release.
Quality assurance managers will aim to bring the development team to a level where majority, if not all, bugs are found in house, rather than being found by customers after the product has been released and sold.
The company could also look at the % per all products released in a given time period (e.g. annually). This is a key indicator for the company’s reputation and credibility, and, if positive, a competitive advantage in the market.
Formula:
Total no. of bugs found in-house/ total no. of bugs found in the software product released x 100
Total no. of bugs found in-house/ total no. of bugs found in software products released x100
KPI Units: %
KPI Time Frame: update monthly, quarterly or annually

Example:
A software development company released a new product and within a 6 months period assessed the number of bugs found in the product.
One of the calculations was to find the % of Bugs Found in House
Total number of bugs found in 6 months per product: 40
Total number of bugs found in house: 15
% of Bugs found in House:
15/40 x 100 = 37.5 %
This shows that whilst approximately 40% of the bugs have been found in-house, a 60% of bugs have been found outside, probably by clients.
