WinningKPI - Software Development/Quality - KPI for Measuring of Defect Removal Efficiency (DRE) posted in category Software Development/Quality Oana Boteanu Details:
This indicator is for measuring the Defect Removal Efficiency of a Software Development Company. In other words, this KPI measures the efficiency of detecting defects before delivery and correcting them internally, as a % of the total number of defects identified in a project life cycle.
This KPI is very similar to the % of bugs found in house. Software Companies may use their DRE rate to compare against competition, to include in their promotional campaigns in order to achieve customer credibility (if rate is high), or to simply identify why profits/sales are not as high as targeted.

Formula:
Total no. of defects detected and corrected internally/ Total no. of defects in a project life cycle x 100

KPI Units: %

KPI Time Frame: update quarterly or annually

KPI Expert Scoring high in DRE KPI is fundamental to the performance of a software development company. Let us assume company A and company B and compare against each other (delivering the same project, with same timeline)

Company A DRE %:
Total number of defect in project life cycle: 40
Total number of defects detected and corrected internally: 10

DRE %:
10/40 x 100 = 25%

Company B DRE %:
Total number of defect in project life cycle: 40
Total number of defected detected and corrected internally: 25

DRE %:
25/40 x 100 = 62.5%

Company B is much for efficient in terms of Defect Removal therefore has a higher chance to deliver better software programmes, with fewer defects.
