WinningKPI - Health Care - KPI for Measuring of Average patient facing time per nurse posted in category Health Care KPI details: This indicator is for measuring the average time a nurse spends with the patient, as a % of the total working hours. This is calculated by dividing the total time nurses spend attending to patients by the total number of nurses.
The hospital management team will aim to maximise this KPI, as it will help to benefit from employee costs and increase the quality of the health care. This can be used in performance management of individual nurses, where a KPI % is set as an objective to meet and measure against.
However, other factors affecting the nurse’s working time needs to be taken into consideration. For instance, if the nurse has to deal with other hospital issues, the patient face to face time may decrease, but the value the nurse brings to the hospital may remain the same (or increase).

A hospital measures this KPI over a month period.
The total nurse-patient facing time is of 1000 hours.
The hospital has 8 nurses.
The average patient facing time per nurse is:
1000/8 = 125 hours per month
A nurse works on average 35 hours a week, therefore around 140-160 hours a month.
125/160 x 100 = 78%
125 hours represents around 78% patient facing time of the nurse’s total working hours.
