This indicator is for measuring the amount of time effort a software company puts into design versus the amount of time effort put into development. The KPI is calculated by dividing the time figures amongst each other (lower one first).
This KPI is very useful to identify where the most effort goes into, planning and designing, or actual software development. The management team may try to get a balanced ratio between these two stages; however, they may put in place strategies to ensure the development part gets the most attention.

Formula:
Total no. of days (or hours) spent on design/ Total no. of days (or hours) spent on development

For example, if a software company identified that in one month 200 staff hours were dedicated to design and 600 were dedicated to development:
200/600 = 0.33, ration 0.33:1, which is approximately a 1:3 , where for every 1 hour spent on design, 3 hours are spent on development

KPI Time Frame: update monthly or quarterly

This is used to compare efforts of design vs. development. A company may compare this against other successful companies in the same market in order to identify similarities/differences and identify factors that would lead to increasing success.

Example of Time Ratio Design to Development Calculation:

A company measures this over a month period:

Total number of hours dedicated to design: 300 hours
Total number of dedicated to development: 750 hours

Time ratio design to development:
300:750 (divide all by 150)

2:5, where for every 2 hours of design, 5 hours are spent on development
