KPI details:

This indicator is for measuring the downtime of the system due to security incidents, as a % of the total downtime, in a given time period. This is calculated by dividing the total downtime due to security incidents by the total downtime of the system in the given time period (e.g. one month).

In a company where business runs only through the IT systems, downtime can represent a very high cost (e.g. 1 hour of downtime in a company with 200 employees, it’s at the cost of 200 paid hours + extra costs – electricity, rent, business lots etc).

Therefore, security systems should be put in place to minimise the % of downtime due to security incidents.

Formula:

Total downtime due to security incidents/ Total downtime x 100

KPI Unit: %

KPI Time Frame: update monthly

This KPI is useful to measure the cause-effect of security incidents on the company performance.
For instance, a company may want to measure the % of downtime of the system due to security incidents, over a 3 months period.

The formula is:
Total downtime due to security incidents/ Total downtime x 100

Total downtime in 3 months: 60h
Total downtime due to security incidents: 10 h

% of Downtime due to security incidents:
10/60 x 100 = 17 %

Therefore, the results show that the security incidents are accountable for 17 % of the total downtime.
