This indicator is for measuring the hours the software development team spends on fixing bugs as a % of the total hours spent on product development, per given time period or per release.
This KPI is a useful measure of effort and cost that the company puts into fixing bugs. The company’s aim will be to minimise this KPI.
When used together with other quality KPIs such as Average no. of defects per man month effort, Number of bugs per release etc., these KPIs can give a very clear measure of where the company is in terms of quality and performance. Using this information, managers my develop strategies and set future KPIs to measure their performance.
Also, this KPI could be used to asses individual employee performance.
However, for an accurate figure, the KPI will have to measure the Total of Hours used for Fixing Bugs as a % of the Employee’s Total Development Effort, and not an average of the entire workforce.
Formula:
Total no. of hours used for fixing bugs/ total no. of hours used for product development x 100
KPI Units: %
KPI Time Frame: update quarterly or at the end of product release

A company measures this KPI over a 6 months period (small company, 20 FTE)
Total number of hours used for product development:
10 000 (on average 20 hours a week per FTE)
10 000h / 20 employees = 500h per employee per 6 months
500h /6 months = 83 h per month
83h/4 weeks = 20-21 h per week
Total number of hours used for fixing bugs: 2000 (on average 8 hours a week per FTE)
See calculation above to obtain 8 h per week
% of Hours used for fixing bugs:
2000/10 000 x 100 = 20 %
Hence, 20 % of the total development time is spent fixing bugs
