This indicator is for measuring the bugs reported by clients as a % of all bugs found per software product released.

The aim of the management team would be to minimize this figure, and maximise the % of Bugs found In-House KPI. In order to measure their success rate on doing so, a ratio of the two KPIs, % of Bugs Reported by Clients and % of Bugs found In-House, may be used.

The management team may put in place strategies to meet these targets, such as staff training, employment of qualified quality assurance staff, improvement of testing procedures etc.

Formula:

Total no. of bugs reported by clients / total no. of bugs found in released products x100

KPI Units: %

KPI Time Frame: update monthly or quarterly

Example:
A software development company released a new product and within a 6 months period assessed the number of bugs found in the product.
One of the calculations was to find the % of Bugs Reported by Client.

Total number of bugs found in 6 months per product: 30
Total number of bugs found by client: 12

12/30 x 100 = 40%

Out of the total number of bugs, 40% have been found by the clients
This resembles that potentially 60% of the bugs have been found in house.
The aim is to maximise the bugs found in house and minimize the number of bugs found by clients.
