This indicator is for measuring the numbers of defects found per line of code. This KPI is used for quality control, as it measures the number of defects in a software product divided by the number of lines of code the product has.
To keep quality standards and lower production costs, the management team may develop strategies to minimise this KPI.

Formula:
Total no. of defects per software product/ total lines of code per software product

KPI Units: number

KPI Time Frame: update quarterly or at the end of product release

Example:
A company calculates this for the 3 new products released (in the last quarter):

Total number of lines of code (for all 3 products jointly): 9000
Total number of defects: 300

300/9000 = 0.03 defects per line of code, 33.3 defects per 1000 lines of code

Every product has on average 3000 lines of code, hence 100 defects per product.
The aim is to minimize this by identifying the defects in house and fixing them before product release.
100 defects is a very high number per product.
