This indicator is for measuring the average number of bugs per release of a software product. This KPI is used for quality control and becomes even more measurable when used over periods of time. For instance, the management team may look at the quarterly figure of average number of bugs per release.
This KPI can be used as a foundation to build strategies that will increase the quality of software products, and minimise trial and error.
Formula:
Total number of bugs per products released / Total number of products released
For instance, if a software company has released 20 new products in a quarter and a number of 40 bugs have been identified:
40/20 = 2 bugs per product released

KPI Time Frame: update quarterly

Example:
A company measures the Number of Bugs per Release KPI over a year period.
In the one year period, the company released a total of 120 products.
Total number of bugs for the products released was of 200.
Total Number of bugs: 300
Total number of bugs per release:
300/200 = 1.5
Therefore, the company averaged a result of 2.5 bugs per release
