This is calculated by summing up all the tasks that are independent between each other.
It is important to keep this KPI, as interdependencies can play a big role in completing tasks. For instance, if in a project of 10 tasks, 5 are interdependent, the progression of the project may be delayed because one of the 5 tasks could not be achieved.
Although interdependencies are regular in projects, often the project managers try to minimise this KPI, to reduce risk, such as the cause effect between the interdependent tasks.

The marketing team of a cosmetics company was given a project to start a direct mail campaign where all customers from the client database will be sent at home a product sample and a discount coupon.
The first task was to order the samples from the production team, then to set up the mail and work with administrators to print letters etc. The project had a total of 20 tasks, and the first 12 were interdependent between each other.
If the production team did not send the samples on time, or the admin team did not print the letters, if the printing company did not print the coupons, the project could not progress.
All these tasks were interdependent and out of the hands of the main team in charge. Hence, the challenge for the team members was to manage the relationships with the exterior partners rather than the project, and little control was over the time frame etc.
As mentioned in the description above, task interdependence can represent a risk for the project management, especially due to the cause-effect the project tasks have on each other.
