This indicator is for measuring the total number of defects per functional/use case point. It is calculated by dividing the total number of defects detected in the software, by the total number of function points (FPs).
It is in a company’s interest to minimise this KPI, and put in place strategies that will lower the overall no. of defects in development.
The success of the strategies put in place to minimize this KPI may be measured by creating a chart with the monthly or quarterly fluctuations of this figure.

Total no. of defects found in the software/ Total no. of FPs

KPI Time Frame: update monthly or quarterly

This is calculated over a six months period.
Total number of defects found in the software: 40
Total number of function points: 4
40/4 = 10 defects per function point
The aim is to minimise this to 2 defects or less per function point.
