WinningKPI - IT Security - KPI for Measuring of Frequency of IT security audits posted in category IT Security KPI details: This indicator is for measuring the frequency of security audits. This is calculated by dividing the number of security audits by a given time period (e.g. per month). For instance, if 4 security audits are carried out monthly, the frequency will be of one audit per week.
A high frequency of audits resembles a healthy security system, and the opposite for a low frequency. However, this KPI does not give more information than how many audits are carried out, and even if the audits are frequent, the IT security level could still be low. Therefore, more IT security KPIs should be used for analysis, such as % of systems covered by antivirus/antispyware protection, % of systems not to policy patch levels, % of IT Security Training etc.
Formula:
Number of security audits/ time period
KPI Unit: number
KPI Time Frame: update quarterly or annually

Example:
As a result of a poor IT Security system performance, Company A is measuring the Frequency of Security Audits, in order to identify if this is a cause of under-performance.
Formula:
Number of security audits/ time period
Total number of audits: 48
Time period: 6 months (24 weeks)
48/6 = 8 audits per month – 2 audits per week
In order to improve IT security performance, the company increased this KPI to 3 audits per week and will measure performance again after 6 months to identify whether any changes/improvements occurred.
