This indicator is for measuring the average number of defects created per man (FTE) month effort. This KPI is useful for identifying the error level of the FTE effort, which will be aimed to be minimized in order to keep quality standards and lower costs.
This KPI can be used together with other quality KPIs to assess the effect on production of the man errors (e.g. in terms of costs, product functionality, time etc).

Formula:
Total no. of defects/ Total staff (FTE) month effort

For example, a small software company with 10 full time employees that has identified 50 defects in production that month would calculate this KPI as following:
50/ 10 = 5, hence 5 defects per man month effort

KPI Units: number

KPI Time Frame: Update monthly or quarterly

KPI Expert Example:
A Software Development Company with a total of 200 Full Time Employees is calculating the Average Number of Defects per Man Month Effort

Total number of defects processed in a month: 500

Average Number of Defects per man month effort:
500/200 = 2.5

From this calculation, the result is that 2.5 defects are created per man month effort, in other words 2.5 defects per 1 FTE.
This figure is likely to be much higher than this in the real world, and the aim is to minimize it.
