This indicator is for measuring the average performance rating of an organization or department. This KPI is calculated by the total performance rating over the total number of appraisal occurrences in the period.

Most effective where the performance ratings are not forced distributed. This measure can highlight pockets of high or low performance which can be used to identify poor or exceptional performing employees.

Formula:

Total Performance rating / total performance appraisal occurrences

KPI Units: Performance Rating

KPI Time Frame: Performance updated annually, reportable monthly.

In the company that I work for, I find that this measure provides a good overview that can show overall performance increasing or decreasing depending on who has left the organisation or transferred between departments.

This measure along is not enough. I have found it valuable to also compare age, tenure, time in current role and departmental breakdowns by average performance rating which helps identify where poor or high performance exists.

To report on this measure monthly, the last day of the reporting period can be used to assess average performance scores of active employees only.
