This indicator is for measuring the time effort spent on re-developing applications due to source code loss, as a % of total time spent on applications.
Source-code loss can incur a high cost for software development companies. If a developer has worked on an application for 10 hours and then lost all that information, an extra 10 hours of work will need to be dedicated to rewrite the source code, which means that the company is paying double for that.
Before taking strategic action in minimising source code loss, managers should first understand the cause of this. Further KPIs may be used in conjunction with this one, such as % of source code loss due to system failure, or % of source code loss due to personnel error etc.
Formula:
Total time spent re-developing applications due to source code loss/ total time spent on applications x 100
KPI Units: %
KPI Time Frame: update quarterly

A company measures the time spent re-developing applications as a result of code loss, as a % of total time spent on applications, over a year period.
Total time spent on applications: 11 000 hours
Total time spent re-developing applications due to source code loss: 1500
KPI %:
1500/11 000 x 100 = 13.6 %
Hence, the company puts 13% of its developing efforts into re-developing applications due to source code loss.
This is a loss to the company, as they have pay twice for the same amount of work to be done.
This KPI needs to be minimized.
