KPI details:

This indicator is for measuring the time between units of production output and customer demand. It is calculated by dividing the available production time per given time period (day, month) by the customer demand per that given time period.

For example, if a bakery works 480 minutes a day and the customers demand is of 100 pieces of bread per day, the Takt Time is 4.8 minutes. Hence, the bakery has 4.8 minutes to make one piece of bread.

It is very important that production and demand are synchronized, and the Takt Time KPI lays at the foundation of a lean production system. Therefore, companies may put in place strategies and systems to ensure that production and demand are matched.

Formula:

Available production time per time period (day, month)/ customer demand per time period (day, month)

KPI Unit: time

KPI Time Frame: update quarterly or annually

TAKT Time is a very useful KPI to measure timing between production and demand.
Let’s take for example McDonald's.
Let us assume that for one of the McDonald's restaurants, there are 800 customers, demanding one burger each.
The restaurant works 600 minutes a day (10h).
The TAKT Time is:
600/800 = 0.75 minutes per burger
This seems like an impossible equation, however, the restaurant will probably have around 7+ workers
Assuming 7 hours for every hour of shift (regardless of whether they change shifts or not)
Working time: 600 x 7 = 42000

TAKT TIME per worker:
42 000 / 800 = 5.25 minutes per worker per burger

This could also been calculated by multiplying the initial TAKT TIME 0.75 by 7 staff members
