This indicator is for measuring the difference between the projected vs. actual hospital bed occupancy. In other words, it looks at how effectively the hospital bed occupancy can be predicted. This is measured by calculating the percentage of actual hospital bed occupancy from the projected hospital bed occupancy.
A high percentage resembles a close to accurate predication rate. It is important for hospitals to be able to predict hospital bed occupancy, as other elements can be planned for, such as necessary staff, amount of medication needed etc.
Formula: Actual Hospital Bed Occupancy / Projected Bed Occupancy x 100
If a hospital measures its Projected vs. Actual Hospital Bed Occupancy over a year period:
Let us assume that the hospital projected bed occupancy of 90%, based on current demand.
However, the actual bed occupancy did not overcome 85%.
If we assume that hospital maximum bed occupancy is around 200 patients per year (taking into consideration average stay figure)
Therefore:
Predicted bed occupancy %: (90 x 200) / 100 = 180
Actual Bed occupancy %: (85 x 200) / 100 = 170
Actual vs. Projected Bed Occupancy:
170/180 x 100 = 94 %
Or we could calculate:
180/170 x 100 =106 %
The error between predicted and actual bed occupancy is around 6%.
