This is measured by dividing all hospital costs per total number of beds, in a given time period.
This is an important KPI, as the hospital’s management team needs to be aware of the cost per bed, and use this in budget management.
Minimizing costs per hospital bed whilst maintaining quality standards of health care is also very important and this KPI can assist in building strategies to minimise costs.

Formula:
Total hospital costs/ Total number of hospital beds

If a hospital measures the average total costs per hospital bed over a year period:
Average Total Cost per year: 40m
Total number of beds: 200

Average Total Costs per Hospital Bed KPI:
$40m / 200 = $200 000 a year per hospital bed

If we look at total cost per hospital bed per day this would be:
$200 000 /365 days = $548 a day
Hospital costs can go up to $1000 a day per bed, recent studies show
