This indicator is for measuring the average man-hours used to write a software line of code. This is calculated by divided the total number of man-hours spent of writing software lines by the total number of lines written, in a given time period.
The Average man-hours per software lines of code is a useful KPI for calculating the cost for production, and the effort put into development.
Formula:
Total no. of man –hours spent writing software lines of code/ total no. of software lines of code
For example, if we take a 1 day time period in a software development company, where a total of 20 man hours have been spent to write 400 software lines of code:
20/400 =0.05 h, hence 0.05 h (3 minutes) are spent per software line of code writtem
The company may choose to measure the time spent per 1000 lines of code, which would be 0.05 x 1000 = 50h

This KPI could be used as comparisons between companies to measure performance. For instance, let us calculate the man –hours per software lines of code for Company A and Company B
Company A:
Over a day period, a total of 40 hours are spent writing software lines of code
1000 total lines of code have been written that day
Man-hours per software line of code:
20h/1000 = 0.04h = 2.4 minutes per software line of code
Company B:
Over a day period 35h are spent on writing software lines of code
700 total lines of code have been written that day
Man-hours per software line of code:
35/700 = 0.05h=3 minutes per software line of code.
Therefore, the ratio is 2.4:3, where Company A delivers a software line of code in 2.4 minutes and Company B delivers it in 3 minutes.
