KPI’s to measure freight forwarding

What need good KPI’s to measure the performance of a freight forwarding industry, something which could also be compared with competitors of the same industry. I work for a freight forwarding industry as a Finance Head and look to building on KPI’s which could help measure key performance drivers, as an industry practice, also helping to compare with competitor KPI’s of the same industry for understanding where we stand.

Dear Mushtaq,   Thank you for your question. Here is a good summary on the topic by California State Polytechnic University. According to that report there is a no universal agreement on KPIs, but this set is used in all examined companies:

  • Average length of haul
  • Operating ratio
  • Revenue per ton-mile
  • Tonnage (total, all loads)
  • Ton-miles or barrel-miles
  • Terminal dwell time or empty miles factor
